What Makes the Turtle Hospital Worth Centering a Trip Around
If you have not visited yet, let’s set the scene. The Turtle Hospital at 2396 Overseas Highway is the world’s first fully licensed veterinary hospital dedicated entirely to sea turtles. Founded in 1986 by Richie Moretti, who famously turned his motel into a rehabilitation center after watching injured turtles was up near his property. The facility has since rescued, rehabilitated, and released well over 2,000 sea turtles back into the wild.
Five of the seven sea turtle species found on Earth swim in the waters around the Florida Keys: Green, Hawksbill, Leatherback, Kemp’s Ridley, and Loggerhead. All of them are endangered or threatedened. The Turtle Hospital treats them all. From boat strik injuries and fishing line entanglement to the removal of fibropapilloma tumors, which affect more than half of the Green sea turtles in these waters.
Tours run daily from 9 AM to 4 PM (last tour), with guided educational programs lasting about 90 minutes. Admission is $27 for adults and $13 for children aged 4 to 12. Reservations are strongly recommended. These tours sell out, especially in peak season. Book in advance at turtlehospital.org or call (305) 743-2552.
Why Sea Dell Motel Is the Right Base for Your Visit
Plenty of people book the closest-looking option on a travel site and end up with sticker shock or disappointment. Sea Dell is different. It consistently earns top marks on TripAdvisor (ranked among the top accommodations in Marathon) for exactly the reasons that matter: cleanliness, value, friendly staff, and a location that is genuinely hard to beat.
The motel has been fully remodeled, and it shows. Rooms are available in queen, king, and double configurations. Each room is stocked with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, microwaves, coffee makers, and free high-speed Wi-Fi. The beds are comfortable, the AC works, and the bathrooms are clean. That might sound like table stakes, but anyone who has stayed at the wrong motel in the Keys knos these things are not guaranteed.
Outside, the property is lush and tropical. There are palm trees, picnic areas, BBQ grills, and a sparkling heated outdoor pool that is perfect after a morning at the Turtle Hospital. It is the kind of place where you sit down by the pool with a cold drink and realize you do not actually need to go anywhere else for the rest of the afternoon.
